What is the pass mark for the NMC CBT?
According to the NMC's test specification, the current pass mark for Part A numeracy is 87% (13 out of 15 correct). Part B clinical pass marks vary across the nursing fields to reflect the difficulty of each test, but are generally set between 60% and 70%.
Do I have to pass both parts of the CBT at the same time?
No. Part A and Part B are taken in one sitting but are passed or failed separately. If you fail one part, you only resit that part. You must pass both before you can join the NMC register.
Is there negative marking in the NMC CBT?
No. Every question is marked correct or incorrect, with no partial credit and no marks taken away for wrong or unanswered questions. Always give an answer, even if you have to guess.
How is the NMC CBT pass mark set?
The NMC used the Angoff method to set the initial standard, and uses statistical techniques to keep the standard the same across different versions of the test over time. Part A and Part B each have their own standard.
What happens if I fail the NMC CBT?
You have three attempts as part of one application, with at least 10 days between sittings, and you only resit the part you failed. After three failed attempts, your application closes and you must wait six months before applying and sitting the CBT again.
