NMC CBT exam 2026: format, pass mark, fees and resits
Everything you need to know about how the Computer-Based Test works.
The Computer-Based Test (CBT) is Part 1 of the NMC's Test of Competence. Nurses trained outside the UK take it to join the NMC register. Part 2 is the OSCE, a practical exam held in the UK. You can take the CBT at Pearson VUE test centres in most countries, and you can sit the CBT and OSCE in either order.
The test is specific to your field (adult, children's, mental health or learning disabilities nursing). It has 115 questions in 3 hours, split into two parts:
| Part A: Numeracy | Part B: Clinical | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 15 | 100 |
| Time | 30 minutes | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Format | Type in a number | Multiple choice, 4 options, 1 correct |
| Current pass mark | 87% (13 out of 15) | Varies by field, generally 60–70% |
| Suggested pace | Up to 2 minutes per question | Up to 1.5 minutes per question |
You do your working on an erasable note board provided at the test centre, then type your Part A answers on screen. You can go back and change answers before you finish. The time allowance includes any breaks you choose to take.
You get a pass or fail for each part. Results are on your exam report straight away, and in your Pearson VUE account within 48 hours. Practise under the same conditions with a timed mock exam.
What is the pass mark for the NMC CBT?
According to the NMC's test specification, the current pass mark for Part A numeracy is 87%, which means 13 out of 15 questions correct. Part B clinical pass marks vary by nursing field to reflect the difficulty of each test, but are generally between 60% and 70%. Each part is passed or failed separately.
How many times can I sit the NMC CBT?
You have three attempts as part of one application, with at least 10 days between sittings. You only resit the part you failed. After three failed attempts your application closes, and you must wait six months before applying and sitting the CBT again.
How much does the NMC CBT cost?
The NMC lists the fee for sitting both parts as £83. A resit of Part A only is £50, Part B only is £70, and both parts is £83. Check the NMC website before booking, as fees can change.
Is there negative marking in the CBT?
No. Every question is marked correct or incorrect with no partial credit, and you don't lose marks for wrong or unanswered questions, so always give an answer.
Can I get extra time?
The NMC may offer reasonable adjustments, such as a separate room or up to 25% extra time, depending on your needs. Contact the NMC before you book and be ready to provide evidence.
